Cancer Now Top Killer of Americans

Cancer has surpassed heart disease to become the leading cause of death in the U.S., according to new statistics released today by the American Cancer Society
The group predicts that 1,372,910 Americans this year will hear the words "you've got cancer." And, the group says, in 2005 cancer will kill 570,280 Americans — more than 1,500 a day.
Despite cancer's spot as America's No. 1 cause of death, the overall U.S. cancer death rate actually has been going down. Why? More widespread cancer screening and better cancer treatment, says Elizabeth Ward, PhD, director of surveillance research for the American Cancer Society.
"We can say with confidence that both are occurring," Ward tells WebMD. "The declines in the cancer mortality rate are due to earlier detection and to improvements in treatment."
Breast cancer causes a third of all cancers in women. It's their second leading cause of cancer death. But here, too, death rates are going down — again largely due to more women getting screening mammograms and to advances in treatment.
I can tell you from personal experience that when you hear those words "You've got cancer" it takes your breath away Those who know me know that a year ago Feb 18 I was told that I had breast cancer(over the phone while I was at work) I basically went into shock and became hysterical After meeting with my surgeon and lots of prayer I found out that there was a good chance that it wasn't a "true" cancer I had an open biopsy procedure and he removed a golf ball size area which came back benign I feel blessed but also anxious as my next mammogram is scheduled in 2 weeks
Today at work I talked with a coworker who had her 1st mammogram because of what happened with me Her mammogram also came back abnormal and she will be having a biopsy to determine if it is a tumor I sat and talked with her about her feelings and fears and the procedure I know how she feels I've been there I hope I gave her some comfort and I will be praying for her this next week as she goes through what I did last year
I pray her results are as positive as mine were Even though it makes me nervous to go through this again in February I know how important it is
Early detection is the key and prayer is powerful

You have an awesome job where you can just 'be Jesus' to so many people. I'm sure you knew that, though :-).
