Chronicles of Narnia/The DaVinci Code--Are they effective evangelism tools?

I read an article this morning by Dan Kimball which had some good points about using movies for evangelism

I kinda agree with Kimball in the fact that churches do place to much hype on the evangelical movies today but it is a great tool to make people ask questions about their salvation. After all Jesus always used questions to make people think. I also think it makes us step up to the plate to 'knowing' what we believe so when those questions come we can give the answers. And in asking others to learn about Christ without it sounding too churchy.

The only thing I really question is that the movies are so 'surface' that unless you have a 'net' to catch all those who may really be seeking - those people may not find the true answers. Sometimes an intimate friendship btw. 2 people can go farther in changing a heart condition to the plan of salvation that has results.

I trust that God will deal having the right people in the right spot at the right time.

The important thing to keep in mind is in the title of this post: "Are they effective?"

Georga Barna did some research on the effects Passion of the Christ had on church membership. Over the three months after the release, he found that the membership went up by about 15% for the average church. But within the next 3 months the church attendance dropped back to the same level as prior to the release of the movie. If you look at that, I would have to say that these are not effective as evenagelism...The problem is in the way we try to utilize the opportunity. Most ministers try to approach this as a great event to invite a friend to. But because so many Christians of this era and culture are not educated in doctrinal truths and ppractices, the questions that are raised by friends are often unanswered by the one doing the inviting. Instead the minister is placed in a postion of explaining the movie via a sermon series or a newsletter, or whatever form he utilizes. This takes the responsibility off of the church-going christian and places it on the minister. Because there is typically much less of a relationship between the friend and the minister than the friends themselves a number of factors can interrupt the flow of evangelism in this manner. Evangelism is about relationships, not about the desimmination of information, and until we can understand that, we will have churches full of people who have little connection to a cummunity but a strong dependance on the teachings of a minister.

The movies can be a way to open the door to nonchristians but I think there needs to be that investment of relationship and one on one question/answer Even if you invite the person to church, you are the one they trust and you need to be prepared to share your faith or it won't be effective I think the reason there was a decrease in church attendance after "Passion of Christ" is we invited them to the movie,we invited them to church and then dropped the ball..no investment of time in the relationship..it takes love and time and unfortunately we forget that part too many times..we depend on others to do it for us
